Chalet-nursery Lawn Seed Instructions

How to establish a beautiful Chalet-nursery lawn:

For New Lawns:

  1. Soil Preparation
  • Loosen soil to a depth of 3-4”.
  • Rake level and remove foreign debris.
  • Apply lawn starter fertilizer.
  1. Apply Seed
  • First, determine the area’s square footage.
  • Evenly broadcast seed at 1 pound per 300 square feet.
  • Apply half the seed in a north/south pattern, then apply the remaining half in an east/west pattern.
  • Lightly rake the area to insure good seed contact with soil.
  • Lawn seed germinates best when barely covered with 1/8” soil.

For Established Lawns:

  • Mow grass to 2-3”.
  • Loosen soil to 1/2” deep in bare areas.
  • Broadcast seed at a rate of 1 pound per 500 square feet.

Watering

  • Water initially so the soil is moist to a depth of about 1”.
  • Water daily if it is not raining, keeping the root zone moist. Continue watering daily until the new seed has germinated, approximately 3-4 weeks.
  • Gradually reduce watering frequency, but don’t allow the soil to dry out until the grass is well-established (45-60 days).
  • After 60 days, the lawn is considered established. Lawns require 1” of moisture per week when temperatures are 75° F or below. Add an additional 1/2” of moisture for every 10 degrees above 75° F.

Maintenance

  • Mow your new lawn for the first time when it exceeds 3”.
  • Mow regularly, removing no more than 1/3 of the blade at any one time.
  • Important: keep your mower’s cutting height at 3”.
  • Do not use weed control or “weed and feed” products until after the third mowing.
  • Apply a high-quality lawn food every 6-8 weeks.
